Abstract

The aim of this study is to simulate the mechanical behavior of a control arm under certain load&boundary conditions which constitute a test procedure called 'cedimento', by using finite element method. In this procedure, control arm is fixed its connection points with chassis as boundary condition and the point where shock absorber is mounted is subjected to 80 mm displacement slowly in longitudinal direction of the vehicle as load condition and such that vertical motion is not allowed. The main aim of this test is to obtain the 'x displacement- x reaction force' curve which enables one to determine yield or ultimate load by monitoring stress state and the energy absorbed during deformation until the point of necking region. Since deformations on control arm exceeds elastic limit, the analysis performed as nonlinear. Material data obtained from engineering stress-strain curve and converted into true stressstrain values. The procedure requires that only plastic part of strain values are used. Because of this reason tensile test simulated in ANSYS and stress-plastic strain values obtained.
