CAE analysis of a camshaft support

Testi Riccardo - Piaggio

Abstract

Piaggio is currently developing a twin 1200 cc engine to be mounted on Moto Guzzi motorcycles. A correct timing mechanism design is crucial to attain the desired engine performance: among the other requirements, its components must be able to withstand the dynamic operating loads. One of them is the camshaft support, which was analysed by means of different CAE techniques. A multibody analysis was performed to compute the loads acting on the component and an FEM analysis was performed to compute the load/tension transfer functions. The component's fatigue performance was finally computed combining the two previous pieces of information. Each analysis was performed using a different CAE tool, keeping in mind interfacing requirements between them.
