Design for Cost and Magnetic Optimization of a Gasoline Injector

Abstract

Due to automotive industry reduction in production volumes, some action in the companies started to decrease the costs to reduce the impact of the crisis on the plants.
In this scenario at the beginning of this year was created a Design to Cost Project on our current Solenoid Direct Injector (SDI), XL2.
After a kick off phase, was identified a possible package of modifications with a new Injector Layout.
This new Layout had important changes on the components involved in the magnetic circuit of the injector and at the beginning this was the worst performance of the new design. After a first develop phase with our standard approach was decided to implement Mode-Frontier to try to reach the targets in terms of magnetic performances. A Magnetic circuit parametric model to simulate in Emag (ANSYS) was created. This new approach helped us to understand the best performances in terms of magnetic behaviour of the new layout and with this activity we discover the advantages due to an automatic CAE optimizator. The Design To Cost Project identified a new feasible Injector Layout and showed a new possible metodology better in terms of timing and cost than our standard procedure.
