Multi-phase CFD study of a reciprocating gas compressor with liquid slag ingestion

Barbanti Giovanni - Barbalab

Abstract

The thermo-fluid-dynamics phenomena that occur in a cycle of a reciprocating compressor, and in particular the pressure loss through automatic valves, ducts and manifolds, are not easily investigable and detectable by the traditional experimental way. This investigation is even more difficult when biphasic fluids are concerned. They can be studied only by means of advanced simulation techniques.
The effects of a liquid slug ingestion in a reciprocating compressor cylinder for gaseous hydrocarbons have been analyzed using Multi-phase CFD having the goal to calculate the pressure distribution on the piston, and it has been demonstrated that the pressure forces can reach values so high to cause structural failure in the crank mechanism.
