Car crash simulations and occupant safety with LS-DYNA

Göhner Uli - DYNAmore GmbH (Germany)

Abstract

The main application areas of LS-DYNA are car crash simulation and occupant safety. In this paper the actual trends in these two areas are being addressed and actual developments both in the simulation software LS-DYNA and in the way the simulation model is built will be presented. New discretization methods within LS-DYNA like the isogeometric elements based on NURBS and recent achievements in applying these methods to solve industrial problems will be shown. Also recent developments concerning the performance of LS-DYNA on parallel computer architectures will be shown.
The newly developed hybrid method is taking into account both parallelization technologies like OpenMP, which are available on shared memory parallel systems, and the MPP-version of LS-DYNA, which was especially developed to work on distributed memory computer architecture. For occupant safety an update on the current status concerning dummy models and barrier models will be given and a number of industrial examples show the applicability of the methodologies shown.
