Design space exploration in ship concept design using Paramarine and modeFRONTIER

rner Dominic - QinetiQ GRC (United Kingdom)

Abstract

This paper describes the development of a novel approach to ship early stage design; making use of the warship and submarine design package Paramarine and modeFRONTIER software packages. The paper describes the initial concepts and requirements before discussing the methodology behind the development of the final product. It was the aim of the project to produce a working software solution which would allow naval architects to rapidly explore the entire extent of the design space. Once complete the system would allow naval architects to produce thousands of balanced design solutions where previously only a small number could be analysed to the same level of detail. The design space exploration outlined can be used to produce accurate cost vs. capability data early in the design process. It is hoped that this will lead to more informed cost/capability trade off decisions to be made, leading to a greater degree of confidence and success throughout the entire project.
