Abstract

This CFD activity has been conducted by EnginSoft and Franco Tosi Meccanica with the objective to develop a methodology for the numerical analysis of a Pelton hydraulic turbine. The CFD analysis encompasses the modeling of the whole machinery, including the inlet spouts and the discharge tank. The adopted transient approach allows the simulated scenario to be quite near to the physical reality of this turbo-machinery. The performed analysis has brought to good results, in spite of a remarkable computational effort, due to the grid dimensions, the time period of the considered phenomenon and the multi-phase flow. The study of the discharge of each bucket and other detailed 3D numerical analyses along with the use of ANSYS CFD Post allow to verify the correctness of the machinery design and to suggest possible improvement directions.
