Abstract

Roller Chain plates are subjected to fatigue failures due to high stress on the inner surface of plate holes. Ball drifting is used to induce residual compressive stress by local plastic deformation and there by increase the fatigue life of chain plate. In Ball drifting process, a hardened titanium ball is pressed through the steel chain plate hole to induce residual compressive stress. Non-linear Finite element model has been developed using ANSYS for the simulation of ball drifting and is discussed in this article. Appropriate mesh on the inner core has been used to get accurate stress distribution.
Multi-linear isotropic material model has been considered for the chain plate. The contact conditions between ball and plate are represented with appropriate ANSYS contact elements . Different ball sizes have been used to quantify the effect of residual stress in the chain plate. The stress variation from the inner surface to outer surface is discussed in this article. The variation of residual stress with ball size is plotted through graphs which helps the design engineer to select the ball size. Optimum model size is used to reduce the non-linear solution time. ANSYS macros are developed to reduce time while carrying out the dialysis for different ball sizes.
