Abstract

Marine current energy can be eligible as one of the most interesting renewable and clean energy sources with the promise of a regular and predictable production of electricity. This paper discusses techniques for design and optimization of marine current turbine blades. A composite 4 meter marine current turbine blade has been designed and analyzed using Blade Element Theory (BET), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), Finite element Analysis (FEA) and commercial Finite Element Modeling (FEM) code, ANSYS. It has been observed that using the numerical BET tool created, power production up to 230 kW is possible from a 3 bladed rotor in Persian Gulf marine current of 2.5 m/s with the proposed blade design. The relevancy of design, search and optimization with respect to structural modeling is discussed.
