The rear suspension arm of an engine is a very stressed component in a bike application; Piaggio standard provides that two tests validate this component: a static strength test and a fatigue one on rig test.
During the design development, the virtual prototypes are analysed by CAE techniques:
a) The first analysis consists in the simulation of the static test, in which the arm must withstand a load equal to 10 times the static load "Pilot + Passenger"; the finite element method and the submodeling technique are used.
b) The durability analysis is performed using the stress-life approach; for a damage calculation, the stress’s tensor time-histories are calculated by the modal superposition method.
Afterwards, the simulated results are validated by experimental tests.
