The paper will provide an overview about the simulation activities at Aalen University of Applied Sciences. In the foundry laboratory in Aalen students use MAGMASOFT f.e. for the optimization of sand castings. All castings simulated, however, will be produced by the students in the sand lab afterwards to perfectly understand the virtual casting world and the real casting world. This includes aluminium and cast iron alloys.
Moreover, Aalen University is a centre for research in the field of high pressure die casting. In all research projects MAGMASOFT is used to better understand unknown phenomena in newly developed processes such as gas injection. The paper will present various case studies of the application of casting simulation in the research field in high pressure die casting.
